A special reading for the peak of the Lion’s Gate portal on August 8, 2026. This is a reading for the collective.

Individual readings are available for purchase below.

Today, August 8, marks the peak of the Lion’s Gate portal, and this reading nestles right into August’s broader theme: Return to the Self. The message is simple: power isn’t always a matter of pushing harder, carrying more, or proving you can survive the weight while making it look manageable. Sometimes power begins when you notice what was never yours to carry and set the damn thing down before it starts circling back to ask for snacks and emotional labor like you last ex (sideways glare at the cishet men that have frightened my cishet sisters into chosen singlehood and celibacy).

The numerology gives this reading its bones: power, descent, self-recognition, and return. August 8 is 8/8: doubled power, authority, responsibility, material life, and self-mastery. Together, the eights make 16, which reduces to 7: introspection, discernment, and the lantern lowered beneath the surface. The year 2026 reduces to 1, the number of identity, selfhood, and beginnings. Add the full date, and we return to 8. That is where the spiral matters: we begin with 8’s raw material of power, pass through 7’s inward reckoning and 1’s question of self, then return to 8 with a different understanding of what power is for.

This reading isn’t asking you to become more powerful by carrying more. It’s asking what your power has been used for, who has benefited from it, and what changes when you finally bring it back to yourself.

That same current appears in The Ocean, the archetype hovering over the whole reading as a confrontation with what can’t be controlled, simplified, or forced into usefulness. The Ocean represents the unconscious: the part of the self that resists control, refuses easy answers, and demands to be encountered rather than managed. You can stand there and pretend you understand it, but the moment you step in you remember that you’re not the largest thing in the room. For a month devoted to returning to the self, that matters. This return isn’t about becoming more efficient. It’s about moving inward, meeting what has been buried under responsibility and expectation, and coming back with a clearer sense of what belongs to you and what never did.

Justice reversed asks whether the values guiding your life are actually yours, or whether you have been living by standards you inherited, absorbed, or accepted without question. Beside it, The Star offers renewal, hope, and the shedding of what has crusted over you. The grip of lies you’ve embodied are loosening and healing is becoming possible. Five of Wands reversed pulls the conflict inward: where are your head and heart circling the same old argument, and where are you trying to want something because you believe you should?

At the center of the spread sits the Queen of Pentacles: capable, grounded, practical, and skilled at sustaining what others depend on. These are real strengths. The Soul Truth card asks, “Do I know all my strengths, and am I using them?” But the more important question is whether you’re using those strengths because they serve your life, or because other people have learned to depend on them without considering the cost to you.

Four of Pentacles reversed points to the need to release what you have been gripping too tightly. Something needs to loosen: control, money, security, a role, a relationship, an expectation, or an old version of yourself that you have kept alive long past the point where it still served you. Not every repeated pattern is meaningful. Some are old survival habits that once protected you but now keep you stuck. King of Cups reversed takes us into emotional vulnerability and the unconscious, reminding us that deep feeling isn’t proof that something has gone wrong. Emotional intensity is not the problem; refusing to listen to it is. The Lovers asks the question we dodge with award-winning agility: what do you actually want? Not what is practical, polite, expected, or easiest for everyone else. What does your heart know? And The Empress reversed closes the tarot with a firm hand on the shoulder: there is no meaningful return to self if you keep pouring care into everyone and everything except yourself.

The plant cards say the same thing more softly, because plants are polite until they are absolutely not. Yarrow is old battlefield medicine: a wound-tender, boundary-setter, blood-stancher, and stern little herbal auntie who knows exactly where the bandages are. It asks what needs tending, but also what needs sealing so you stop leaking life-force all over the floor. Primrose brings a different remedy: softness, brightness, and the permission to let ease be medicinal. It’s the small gold lamp at the edge of the path, reminding you that healing doesn’t always require heroic suffering, ceremonial groaning, or reorganizing your entire psyche by Tuesday. Together, they offer a necessary correction: tend the wound, but do not turn healing into another measure of productivity, discipline, or worth.

Tiwaz lies sideways, pointing to uncertainty around direction, justice, or purposeful action. Isa brings stillness and asks for a pause before acting. Algiz sideways raises questions about protection: what is a real boundary, and what is a fear response disguised as safety? Sowilo, revealed sideways after landing face down, suggests that clarity, vitality, and selfhood are present but not fully accessible yet. Apart from the cluster, Ehwaz stands upright. Through Sleipnir, the horse who crosses between worlds, Ehwaz points to transition rather than force. The next step is not to make the old structure hold. It is to move through the threshold deliberately, with enough awareness to know what you are leaving behind and what you are choosing to carry forward.

This, to me, is where Lion’s Gate meets Return to the Self. This isn’t about manifesting harder, optimizing your spirit, or becoming a sleek little enlightenment machine with impeccable branding and no moss in its cracks. It’s about telling the truth. What is yours? What isn’t? Where are you overextended? What are you protecting yourself from? What pattern keeps circling back with a little clipboard and too much authority? And what would you choose if fear, obligation, and other people’s expectations were not sitting on the council, wearing tiny judgmental hats?

So the work today may be simple, though not necessarily easy. Ask what needs releasing. Ask what deserves care. Ask what you actually want. Then choose one small thing that returns authority over your life back to you: interrupt one loop, soften one old pattern, take one honest step inward and around. A goblin queen does not need to reclaim the whole kingdom before lunch; sometimes she starts by refusing one terrible assignment and eating something with gluten and butter. (Who’s a goblin queen? Surely, not I!).

You don’t have to become someone new today. But you can stop abandoning the strange, sturdy, luminous creature who is already here, standing ankle-deep in the sacred muck of Samsara, turning back toward herself, and holding the keys.
